SPECIAL EDITION – TRINITY JUNIPER STARR

I can count on one hand the number of times in my life—66 years old, thank you very much—that I haven’t had a cat. And of those numerous kitty loves, I’ve never been as attached as I have been to my Juniper. When I say she chose me, I mean that quite literally—while her siblings were tumbling around on the floor, Juniper would climb up on the couch and perch her tiny self on my left shoulder. Always my left shoulder.

And now she’s gone and my heart is breaking.

She was 13 ½ years old—that’s roughly 70 in people years—and her liver failed. I only realized it a week and a half ago when I saw how yellow her ears were.

She, along with five litter mates, were born on the bed next to me at 6:00-ish on Wednesday 2 May 2012. I had a box ready for Shadow to deliver in, but mama cat had other ideas; she wanted to be as close to me as she could. I am relatively certain that my Juniper was born first.

I will miss her dearly, as will her brother and snuggle buddy, Jasper. Incidentally, I am relatively certain that he was born last. He was also the biggest of the litter, and June was the smallest.

I prayed that it wouldn’t happen before or on Christmas…

… and it didn’t. It didn’t happen until sometime in the wee hours Friday morning.

She is buried in the same yard where her two siblings, Penelope and Jakey, and their mother, Shadow, are buried.
