CHAT THURSDAY-on-FRIDAY – LAURA FRANTZ

Please give a warm feathered welcome to author and friend, Laura Frantz.

rem: Hullo Laura, and welcome. Tell us three random things about yourself.

LAURA:  Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, I love to bake bread, and wish I had dual-citizenship in Scotland.

rem:  Oh! A fellow baker!! I’ve English and Irish blood in me, but my kids’ great-great-grandfather (on my former husband’s side) was born in Scotland. What is your favorite quotation and why?

LAURA:  I have so many favorites but here’s one that’s both funny & true:

So avoid using the word ‘very’ because it’s lazy. A man is not very tired, he is exhausted. Don’t use very sad, use morose. Language was invented for one reason, boys—to woo women—and, in that endeavor, laziness will not do. It also won’t do in your essays.” —N.H. Kleinbaum, Dead Poets Society

rem:  When reading, what makes or breaks a story for you? Your fiction pet peeve?

LAURA:  Anachronisms. Modern language & attitudes in historical fiction, contemporary characters in historical dress. Implausible plots. At the same time, my books aren’t perfect & are written by a 21st-century author which surely bleeds through.

rem:  Oh, absolutely! I agree 100%  What are you reading right now?

LAURA:  A Victorian mystery series. Mostly I read for research during the day then enjoy fiction at bedtime. There really should be an 8th day of the week for reading as has been said!

rem:  There should be an 8th day of the week period. LOL Tell us a little about your writing journey.

LAURA:  I signed my first contract in 2008 with Revell & am happy to say more novels are on the horizon. I wasn’t sure about publishing and what that meant for me though writing has been very special to me since childhood. I’m thankful God uses flawed fiction written by flawed people for His purposes.

rem:  I love that He uses us as we are, warts and all. And when the gifts He gave us shine through it’s a spectacular thing. What genre(s) do you write and why?

LAURA:  I write historical fiction though I’m categorized as historical romance. History is more riveting to me than the romance but romance, understandably, seems to have more market appeal. I’ve read almost all historical fiction since childhood though I do enjoy other genres now & then. I was drawn to history early on as soon as I learned to read. What a treasure trove then and now!

rem:  Laura, that’s amazing! I love history—now—and only wish I had liked it half as much when I was in school. LOL  Tell us a little about your latest book? What is your current project?

LAURA:  I’ve written a story set during the American Revolution which opens the door on what a turbulent time period that was for everyone in our nation. No person was untouched. Lots of suspense, romance, and three diverse settings. It’s an honor to write a novel that coincides with our nation’s 250th anniversary of independence and keeps that history alive in even a small way.

rem:  I’ve read several of your stories, and I absolutely love them. And I can’t wait for this next one to make an appearance. What is YOUR favorite part about the book or why do you love this book? Why should we read it?

LAURA:  I love the linen closet and waterfall scenes which just goes to show I am a romantic, after all. 😊 Those were the hardest to write, too, aside from the few battle scenes.

rem:  Well, now, “the linen closet… scene” had me quite intrigued.  What is one take-away from your book(s) that you hope readers identify with?

LAURA:  That while times have changed human nature has not. rem: No, it certainly has not.  History is God’s story and each of us play a part. It’s truly incredible to think an infallible, infinite God uses human beings made in His image to glory Him and accomplish His purposes across centuries. My characters do their part to honor God and live lives for His glory on the page though, like us, it is always through struggle and we have hope.

rem:  I love that, Laura. Fiction is such a wonderful way to share the Truth of God’s Word.  One more and then we’ll close. Do you have a life Scripture?

LAURA:  My mom and I memorized Psalm 139 together when I was a child so it has always meant something to me personally. Those particular Scriptures speak about our lives from conception to our homegoing. I usually sign my books with Psalm 139, too.

rem:  That’s such a beautiful Psalm.  Anything you’d like to add?

LAURA:  Thank you for shining a light on Christian fiction and what makes it unique in a dark world. Honored and blessed to be here!

rem:  Laura, thanks again for chatting with us on my blog today!
