CHAT THURSDAY – PEPPER BASHAM
Please give a warm feathered welcome to author and friend, the Queen of Swoony, Pepper Basham.
rem: Hullo Pepper, and welcome. Tell us three random things about yourself.
PEPPER: I love chocolate-covered almonds, I name my cars, I was so shy when I was little that I only talked to my mom, dad, and brother.
rem: I wasn’t quite that shy, but I can absolutely relate. What is your favorite quotation and why?
PEPPER: Biblical. Romans 8:28: All things work together for the good of those who love the Lord and are called according to His purpose. Why? Because it’s a reminder of how to view life’s good and bad through a heavenly view. It’s incredibly comforting.
rem: That’s also one of my anchor Scriptures. When reading, what makes or breaks a story for you? Your fiction pet peeve?
PEPPER: I have two. If characters (especially women) are whiney. And if the hero and heroine are mean to each other without any redemption or admittance of their wrong. (I also don’t like when children are not written in a developmentally appropriate way. LOL)
rem: Oh yes! Three year olds who talk in complete sentences and complex subjects drives me batty! What are you reading right now?
PEPPER: Sinclair Ferguson’s Let’s Study Romans, Impossible Creatures by Katherine Rundall, and I hope to start The Austen Affair by Madeline Bell very soon.
rem: Goodness! That’s a lot to juggle. (PS – Romans is very possibly my favorite book in the Bible.) Tell us a little about your writing journey.
PEPPER: I’ve been writing ever since I can remember. I still have one of my first chapter books I wrote when I was 10 years old. It’s been a long and sometimes very hard journey, pursued for decades around working a full-time job and being a mom of five, but I’m so thankful that God has brought me to the place I am in my journey. It’s a true joy to get to create stories for His glory and for others’ joy!
rem: Writing, and knowing Father God is in your stories, is absolutely amazing. Confession: I’ve often marveled at how you juggle all your life holds, AND all the wonderful stories you tell. What genre(s) do you write and why?
PEPPER: Historical and contemporary romance. Because I love both 😊
rem: And you do it so well. Tell us a little about your latest book? What is your current project?
PEPPER: Sense & Suitability, my first attempt at a Regency romance with humor. It’s an Austen-inspired second chance romance with a viscount whose inherited a mess as well as guardianship over his chaotic younger siblings and a gentleman-farmer’s daughter who has a scandalous secret as a fiction author.
rem: I can’t wait to read it. What is YOUR favorite part about the book or why do you love this book? Why should we read it?
PEPPER: Well, I always love the romance and really love the banter, but the family dynamics in this book are probably some of my favorite I’ve written.
rem: You had me at banter. What is one take-away from your book(s) that you hope readers identify with?
PEPPER: Hope 😊 I want them to be entertained, of course, but I also want them to leave the end of the story feeling hopeful. I’d also love for joy to just spill out of these stories to the readers.
rem: Pepper, you have absolutely accomplished that. Anything you’d like to add?
PEPPER: Thank you for having me!
rem: Thank you so much for chatting with us on my blog today!
