JERE DISCOVERS THAT MERE IS DRINKING

It happened the day of the cookout. Well, one of many cookouts. I mean, this family was always getting together for something.

This time, we were going to Bethy and Zach’s, just our two families.

Mere had started making her seven-layer salad but left it half done and decided to “go for a walk.” She was hiding in the garage, and I’d bet money she was drinking a beer. I mean, walking off before she finished the salad? That wasn’t like her. Then she takes off on a walk, right when we’re supposed to be heading over to B and Zach’s?

I popped out to catch her before she took off but she was already hustling down the driveway. On impulse I peeked in the garbage bin. Three empty beer bottles.

My gut wrenched. Oh, how I knew the battle she had just stumbled into.

I finished the salad for her and called the girls down. Brooke corralled the littles so I handed the salad to Natalie, and pulled my ribs out of the fridge where they had been marinating since yesterday.

Mere eventually showed up and put on a good show. But I knew. I knew the storm that was raging in her, and if she thought nobody else knew, she was only fooling herself.

“I’ve always had voices—er, stories in my head. I once said I should write them all down so someone could write them someday. I had no idea at the time that someone was me!”

My stories are deep and dark, my characters raw and real, with a healthy helping of hope and joy, humor and laughter, and abiding and sustaining faith.

My characters struggle in some way for their identity. Their stories are their journey to know who God created them to be.

There is also a strong element of friends, family, and faith in all my stories, and the difference it makes to have such a support system.
