THE POWER OF PRAYER

Ian didn’t answer and I had to leave a message. He called back less than an hour later, and twenty minutes after that, I was sitting in his office.

He opened with prayer, then asked me to tell him what was going on. I stuttered and stumbled through, trying to explain in a way that made sense. I mean, it didn’t even make sense to me; how was I supposed to explain it to somebody else?

“You clearly know that you aren’t going to be able to talk her out of wanting to have a baby.” I nodded. “It’s a deep-seated dream, buried so deep in her psyche, she wouldn’t be able to turn it off if she wanted to. But you’ve figured that much out.”

He paused, praying silently. “I’ve come to know you, Jeremy, and I though you are a new Christian, you already know the power of prayer. What many people don’t understand—even seasoned life-long believers—is that prayer is not a magic wand. God is not a genie in a lamp, granting wishes because we rubbed the lamp and set Him free.

“He is sovereign, and He is omniscient—all knowing. His ways are higher than our ways, and we don’t always get to know how things will work out. What He asks of us is to trust Him.”

“I’m learning that. I mean, you’ve heard my story of my motorcycle accident.”

Ian nodded. “That was Holy Spirit keeping you safe. He has a plan for you.”

This time I nodded. “And Mere?”

“We can’t change her. Sometimes we can persuade a loved one to do what needs to be done—in her case, counseling. But we can’t make them do it.

“What we can do is pray, and trust that Father God knows what He’s doing and that He is working all things together for our good.”

“I read that verse the other night.”

“Hold on to that, Jeremy. Also keep in mind that God has you in the palm of His hand. Meredith, too. He sees her misery, He knows her dreams, her longing. And He had a perfect plan for her. Waiting is hard, sometimes it’s agony—”

“It’s agony for me, watching her so miserable.”

“I understand that. God understands, too. He is our peace, Jeremy. Lean into Him and let Him flood you with His peace. And then let that peace and joy spill over to Meredith.”

      “How can I…”

“You don’t. She isn’t able to receive help from you, or anybody in the state she’s in. But Holy Spirit can speak to her in ways we can’t. You don’t have to say a word for peace and joy to touch her spirit.”

      “So, just…”

“Be supportive. Be encouraging. I’m not saying to stop being her friend and partner. You are her support system through this. I know how close she and her sister are, but given the circumstances, Bethy is the one person who can’t help Meredith right not.”

“That’s part of what’s making Mere so crazy. She needs Bethy but she can’t talk to her about this.”

“Exactly. I know as a new believer, your prayer life is in its infancy, so to speak. You need a prayer life on steroids.” He winked and I chuckled. “But know that Holy Spirit is with you in every moment, and as you lean into Him, your prayer life with grow exponentially.

“It may take weeks or it may take months, but Holy Spirit will not let go of Meredith. You don’t let go either. She needs to know that above all, you’re by her side, no matter what comes.”

We talked for another hour, and he gave me some books to read and Scripture passages to meditate on. That was a new word for me, meditate. But it made sense. Kind of like studying, but kind of like digesting food, too. Meditating on Bible verses is what would plant them in my spirit, that’s how Ian explained it.

He also said to pray and speak the Word of God over Mere, and gave me some specific verses to use.

“Before you go, Jeremy.” We were at the door to his office. “Hebrew 4:12 says, ‘For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.’ Start with that verse, and keep it in mind as you pray for your wife.”

“I’ve always had voices—er, stories in my head. I once said I should write them all down so someone could write them someday. I had no idea at the time that someone was me!”

My stories are deep and dark, my characters raw and real, with a healthy helping of hope and joy, humor and laughter, and abiding and sustaining faith.

My characters struggle in some way for their identity. Their stories are their journey to know who God created them to be.

There is also a strong element of friends, family, and faith in all my stories, and the difference it makes to have such a support system.
