CHAT THURSDAY – SARA DAVISON
Please give a warm feathered welcome to author and friend, Sara Davison.
rem: Tell us three random things about yourself.
SARA: I once literally bumped into Donny Osmond on a sidewalk in Toronto; I wanted to be a doctor for a while, but the fact that I hated science turned out to be an issue; I dated my husband for ten weeks and we were engaged for eleven weeks before getting married. Three kids and almost thirty years later, he is still my soulmate and best friend.
rem: I had such a crush on Donny Osmond! What is your favorite quotation and why?
SARA: “Some day you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again.” ― C.S. Lewis
I love this quote because it espouses the joy of living life with childlike wonder, which is what I always aspire to do. As adults, life and responsibilities can bog us down and we forget to slow down and embrace imagination and beauty and joy and the possibility of what could be. I try to be intentional about doing all of those things, which helps me when I sit down to create stories and worlds.
rem: Sara, that’s so beautiful. I’ve said for years that I may be getting older (I’m 66 now) but I refuse to grow up! When reading, what makes or breaks a story for you? Your fiction pet peeve?
SARA: I’m a huge fan of romance, but my biggest pet peeve is a character or characters who says “I love you” way, way too soon. This is especially hard for me to take when I’m not buying the chemistry between them, when they haven’t had a single deep discussion or shown their true selves to the other person, or when the personality or behaviour of one or both characters is just not appealing. I can’t tell you how many times I have told characters in a book I’m reading to slow down a little - love takes time!
rem: I 100% agree! What are you reading right now?
SARA: Caligo by J.J. Fischer. She is one of my favourite authors, and I haven’t been disappointed in anything she has written. If you love great characters, banter, and world-building, you will love her books!
rem: Oh, I do love good banter! Tell us a little about your writing journey.
SARA: I’ve always been a voracious reader – the kid who read under the blankets with a flashlight after being told to turn off the light and go to sleep. I basically lived at the library, and I have a vivid memory of walking up and down the aisles one day when I was about nine, running my fingers along the spines of the books and thinking, all these people wrote a book. It can be done. I can do this, so that desire was planted in me early. It’s a long way from there to actually writing a book, but eventually I did get the idea for a novel and sat down and wrote it in just a few weeks. I thought it was pretty good, but the first editor I showed it to straightened me out quickly 😊 I worked on that book, The Watcher, for five years before it won a publishing contest and came out in 2011. rem: I’ve read that and it was a powerful story. Since then, I have written fourteen novels and have thirteen novellas in anthologies. I’m a hybrid author, so I have a combination of traditionally and indie published books. Although it can be a frustrating and discouraging business, I still love writing and I love the Christian writing community, and I’m thankful every day to be a part of it.
rem: There’s nothing like writing stories. What genre(s) do you write and why?
SARA: I’ve always said I write romantic suspense, and my books do definitely have both romance and suspense. However, my stories are always about the relationships between characters, more even than the action or storyline. The romantic relationship, yes (I love a good love story!) but also the relationships between brothers and sisters, parents and children, chosen family (a big one for me), or friendships. Because of that, I have lately started to refer to my books more as human drama with romantic suspense and elements of women’s fiction. Is that a thing? 😊
rem: It is now. 😉 I’ve come to realize that when I’m writing, or reading or (binge) watching a show, it’s the characters that I’m most invested in. Tell us a little about your latest book? What is your current project?
SARA: I have several on the go at the moment. My latest release is actually a re-release (with new covers and updated content), The Morning Star Rises. This is the third and final book in my The Day Draws Near Trilogy (formerly the award-winning Seven Trilogy) – romantic suspense with human drama and an end-times feel. The Morning Star Rises came out on July 15th.
I also recently tried my hand at something new – a thriller called Eye of the Mind that will come out in September in a collection with three other thriller novels called Secrets Beneath the Waves. Eye of the Mind is the story of a woman who witnesses a murder and clearly sees the murderer’s face, but she has aphantasia, meaning she has no ability to mentally visualize anything. She and the police sketch artist have to work together to piece a drawing of the murderer together before the man, who knows she can’t remember his face and is stalking and taunting her, kills her too. That was a lot of fun to write, so I may have more thrillers in my future. We’ll see.
rem: Aphantasia!! For a visual person that’s a concept that’s hard to grasp. What is YOUR favorite part about the book or why do you love this book? Why should we read it?
SARA: With Eye of the Mind, there is a scene where the two main characters, who have both been very angry with God for a long time over terrible losses in their lives, are talking and realize that the God they have been angry with isn’t the real God. He’s a Santa Claus god they made up in their own minds, a god who exists solely to give them what they want and to make them happy. Once they realize that, they are able to let go of their anger and recognize that the true God has been with them all along. This was an eye-opening scene for me, as I don’t think I have looked at the concept that way before. When that happens when I’m writing and I have to stop and be like, Wow, I never thought of that or I didn’t realize I thought or believed something until my characters said it, those are extremely meaningful moments for me as an author (and hopefully they will be for the readers as well).
rem: Love it when the characters surprise us like that! What is one take-away from your book(s) that you hope readers identify with?
SARA: With both The Morning Star Rises and Eye of the Mind (and every story I write), the overarching theme is that we are never alone. God sees us, knows us, and has promised to never leave us or forsake us. While each book also has its own theme, that is the one I hope and pray readers will take away with them whenever they read anything I have written.
rem: Yes, yes, yes. One more and then we’ll close. Do you have a life Scripture?
SARA: I recently had a romantic suspense novel, One Nine, come out in a collection called Justice. One Nine refers to Joshua 1:9, which says “Have I not commanded you, be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid, do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” My main character has been in hiding from a stalker for five years. Early on, she had one:nine tattooed on her wrist so that whenever she was afraid she could look at it or touch it and it would remind her that God was with her. I have the same tattoo on my wrist to remind me of the truth of that verse, so that is my life Scripture as well as the prevailing theme of everything I write.
rem: Sara, I love that. Anything you’d like to add?
SARA: Something I would like readers to know is that my stories can be a little different than the traditional Christian romantic suspense novels out there (which are fabulous!). As I mentioned, mine always revolve around the characters and their relationships with God and each other, and the suspense and action are the vehicles that carry those relationships along. If you’re looking for something a little different, I’d be honoured if you would check out my books!
And thank you so much, Robin, for having me here and allowing me to share a little of my work and my heart with you and your readers.
rem: Thank you so much for chatting with us on my blog today, Sara. It’s been a pleasure.
