TINY and ARK PAY a VISIT

It was bound to happen. Big Mac found me, found out where I was living. He had a code—never violate a crew member’s mom’s house. So as long as I lived in the house I was off-limits.

But once I moved into the apartment, even though it was technically part of Mom’s house, he saw me as a prime target.

He didn’t come, of course. He sent Ark and Tiny. Tiny is not tiny at all. He is six feet six inches tall. Taller than The Mac, actually. But The Mac makes sure everyone knows who’s boss—him.

“Hey man.” Ark pushed on through the door even though I had only opened it a crack. “Heard you got a new place.” Tiny shoved in behind him.

      “Guys—”

“Stop right there, my friend.” Tiny held up his not-tiny hand.

“We just brought you a present for your new place.” Ark handed me a bag.

I hesitated but knew they wouldn’t leave until I opened it. And the sooner the better.

The bag was nothing fancy, just a plastic Wal-Mart bag. But the present was wrapped really nice. Purple and black striped paper—the crew’s colors, of course. It even had a giant black bow on it. Like making it pretty would make me want it. Whatever it was.

What it was, was a first aid kit. A nice one, too. There were bandages, naturally; I’d never seen so many different kinds. Scissors and clippers, pain meds, calamine and aloe vera, antibiotic ointment and hydrocortisone. A pack of doctor masks and a thermometer, hand sanitizer and cotton balls.

“Geez, guys.” It was a strange thing to give someone. “Thanks.”

“Got this for ya, too.” Tiny lifted another, larger bag he had set by the door.

This was not in a Wal-Mart bag. And it wasn’t in a fancy wrapped box. It was just sitting in a giant paper bag.

“A fire extinguisher.” If I thought I didn’t know what to say before I really didn’t know what to say now.

“You know.” Ark lowered his head and smirked a half smile. “In case there’s a fire or something.”

I took that for the threat it was.

“Those steps out there look pretty rickety.”

      “My brother just rebuilt those.”

“Still, they’re wood. Whole place is wood.” Ark snapped his fingers. “Could go up in flames just like that.”

“Reckon we oughta get going.” Tiny turned. “Boss is expecting us back.”

“Yeah, we been here too long already.”

I knew The Mac had dropped them off and would be rolling up in front of the house. And he would expect them to be out there waiting.

“Thanks for the, uh, presents.” But they were already halfway down the ‘rickety’ stairs.

“I’ve always had voices—er, stories in my head. I once said I should write them all down so someone could write them someday. I had no idea at the time that someone was me!”

My stories are deep and dark, my characters raw and real, with a healthy helping of hope and joy, humor and laughter, and abiding and sustaining faith.

My characters struggle in some way for their identity. Their stories are their journey to know who God created them to be.

There is also a strong element of friends, family, and faith in all my stories, and the difference it makes to have such a support system.
