CHAT THURSDAY – RACHEL HAUCK
Please give a warm feathered welcome to author and friend, Rachel Hauck.
rem: Hullo Rachel, and welcome. Tell us three random things about yourself.
RACHEL: Random, uh? Okay, I hate when things are broken. I want them fixed right away. I do not like overhead lighting and I can make up song chorus to any melody.
rem: Me too on overhead lighting!! It’s a biggie migraine trigger! What is your favorite quotation and why?
RACHEL: “I've missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life, and that is why I succeed.”
This quote is so inspiring. MJ was willing to take shots that may fail but in the end, made more than he missed. We should all embrace a few failures on the way to success.
rem: So true. When we don’t even try, that is the greatest failure of all. When reading, what makes or breaks a story for you? Your fiction pet peeve?
RACHEL: Ah, I’m not sure I can expose this secret. Ha! A lot of authors employ my pet peeve so I think I’m more in the wrong than the authors. Also, when a story doesn’t deliver the promise.
rem: Oooohhhh, intrigue in an interview! What are you reading right now?
RACHEL: I am reading a Hope Holloway series.
rem: I’m not familiar with her but I’ll have to check her out. Tell us a little about your writing journey.
RACHEL: I always wanted to write. As a girl, I kept a diary and my dad encouraged me. “You’re a writer, be a writer.” rem: That is so awesome!!! I majored in Journalism at Ohio State but ended up in the tech world after graduation. Christian fiction was really booming in the early ‘90s. I’d just gotten married and quit my job. My husband and I read a lot. (No TV) I ended up writing an epic WW2 novel that’s still in the closet but I used part of the story in Love Starts with Elle. After a couple of conferences where I met some lovely people, I got my first contract in 2002. I’ve been at it ever since.
rem: And the rest is history as they say. What genre(s) do you write and why?
RACHEL: Romance and women’s fiction. Though I prefer to say I write “love stories” instead of “romance.”
rem: And you do tell a great love story. Tell us a little about your latest book? What is your current project?
RACHEL: The Sands of Sea Blue Beach releases July 15th. It’s a love story between Emery Quinn and Caleb Ransom, and their families. It’s set in the same town as Meet Me at the Starlight. I think readers will enjoy it.
rem: I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy!! What is YOUR favorite part about the book or why do you love this book? Why should we read it?
RACHEL: My favorite part? All of it, really. I spent so much time with these characters and in Sea Blue Beach they feel like family. I loved meeting Emery and Caleb at sixteen, then again at thirty-two. There’s a lot of division in their families as well as the town. We travel along with them as they and Sea Blue Beach find healing. It’s fun and entertaining. We even have a visit from the Royal Blues from my Royal Blue Series.
rem: I love how you say you “met” the characters! What is one take-away from your book(s) that you hope readers identify with?
RACHEL: Stories are such a great way to feel and experience hope and truth. Fiction is full of hyperbolic real life situations and the journey of the protagonists should inspire us to go on our own journey of hope and truth.
rem: I agree 100%, fiction is an illustration of life. One more and then we’ll close. Do you have a life Scripture?
RACHEL: I love Song of Solomon 4:9. “You’ve ravished my heart my sister my bride with one look of your eye and one link of your necklace.” Jesus is so pure in love, our glance His way, or a turn, a determination to know Him, ravishes His heart.
rem: Oh, I love that. What a beautiful image. Thank you so much for chatting with us on my blog today!
RACHEL: Thanks for having me!!!
