JEREMY GUILTY ABOUT WALLY
Wally was heavy into whatever [DRUG].
He got in over his head, and four summers ago he had nearly died at the hands of a dealer Wally owed money to. He was beat to within inches of his life and left for dead. By the time his body was discovered, he was very nearly the body of a corpse. Concussion, cracked skull, both legs broken and multiple ribs cracked or broken. A bruise across his face in the shape of a boot print, stab wounds across his abdomen, a gash across his chest.
It was only after weeks in the hospital and rehab that Wally was functioning at all. And it was only through intensive physical therapy that he had any hope of a normal life again. Or as near normal as it would be for him.
Jeremy felt responsible for the attack on Wally. He had been high that night, and when he was high, his mouth ran like water through a sieve. He talked nonsense mostly, talked of dreams that could have been, fantasized about what it would have been like if he had had a dad. Well, one that came around.
But sometimes Jeremy dished on his friends. Who was sleeping with whom, who had been arrested and who had got away. Who was trying to come clean and who had puked in the alley.
And when The Mac heard Jeremy rattling on about Wally, he grabbed Jeremy by the throat and shook him till his bones rattled.
Jeremy gave his friend up like dirty laundry.
He hadn’t even realized what he had done until he heard the news two days later. Guilt kept him away from the hospital, then condemned him for not going.
“I’m quitting, man.” Jeremy swore when he saw Ark the next time. Ark, Noah Woods, was one of their party buddies.
And for days at a time, Jeremy stayed away.
But he’d see Ark or another of their buddies and he’d slide right back down the never-ending abyss.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
“I’ve always had voices—er, stories in my head. I once said I should write them all down so someone could write them someday. I had no idea at the time that someone was me!”
My stories are deep and dark, my characters raw and real, with a healthy helping of hope and joy, humor and laughter, and abiding and sustaining faith.
My characters struggle in some way for their identity. Their stories are their journey to know who God created them to be.
There is also a strong element of friends, family, and faith in all my stories, and the difference it makes to have such a support system.
